Middle School Summer Math Self-Study: The Office of Mathematics is excited to partner with middle schools to offer acceleration opportunities and to have students successfully complete Algebra 1 by Grade 8.
If your child was in Math 6 or Math 7 during the 23-24 school year, then next year, your child is scheduled to take Math 7 or Math 8. We know that some students may be interested in taking Algebra 1 in Grade 8. We want to make sure that all students in Algebra 1 in Grade 8 are confident and ready for success. To check their readiness, your child be given an assessment at the beginning of the 24-25 school year. This assessment will be arranged by Ms. Mangels, the PGMS Math Department Chair. There are study materials to help you prepare for this assessment. Please see the links to the documents.
In August 2024, during the first week of school, PGMS will offer the self-study test for interested Math 7 (current Math 6) and Math 8 (current Math 7) students. The test results will determine the student's math placement for the 24-25 school year.
Taking Algebra 1 in Grade 8 has some implications for coursework in high school. Per Maryland law, students must earn 4 high school credits in mathematics (which can include Algebra 1 in Grade 8) and must enroll in a mathematics class in each year of high school.
