Science Fair

Pine Grove Middle School is planning a Science Fair on Thursday, January 17, 2008.  All Gifted and Talented Students in grades 6 through 8 are requested to submit an individual project.  We are asking you to support this valuable learning experience.  A packet was sent home with your child during the week of the October 15th to assist you in helping in the preparation of your child’s project.

Students are encouraged to do investigations that use scientific thought processes and the scientific method.  The packet includes checklists to guide your child through each stage of implementation.

Parents, please allow students to assume as much responsibility for the project as possible.  You may provide support, offer advice when necessary, help with expenses for the project, and provide any needed transportation.  When your child writes the report to accompany the project, you may offer to proofread the written report or make suggestions for improvement.  In addition, you should occasionally check on the progress of the project to ensure that it is proceeding on schedule.

Student projects will be due at school no later than 3:00 pm on Monday, January 14th.  Judging will take place throughout the week.  Parent viewing of projects will take place at the Science Fair, on January 17th from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm.  Students producing award-winning projects will be eligible to enter the county-wide Science Fair (Dates TBD).

Thank you for contributing to the success of Pine Grove Middle School’s Science Fair.

Recycling at Pine Grove Middle School

14,725 cans collected during the first two weeks, and still counting…

Thanks to all of those who have been collecting and saving cans throughout the summer to help our community reduce waste.  The Aluminum Can Recycling Club hopes to see you again, along with a few new faces.  We will meet you in the rear of the parking lot, at the big, yellow dumpster to collect your cans.   We meet each Friday that students are in school, between 7:30 am and 8:00 am.   Remember, rinse/wash and crush your cans.  The first 300 cans will earn you 10 SSL hours and each additional 100 cans equals 1 hour. Half credit will be issued for cans that are not crushed.  No credit (hours) will be issued for cans left when the dumpster is unattended.

In addition, we are ready for our student volunteers. See your Science Teacher for a permission slip.  As soon as a completed permission slip is turned in, students may begin earning .5 SSL hours for each Friday on duty.  Student volunteers are to report to the rear of the parking lot by 7:30 am.  Dress appropriately for the weather.

Reading in the Science Classroom and Beyond

IBaltimore County’s Science curriculum is supported by Pearson Prentice Hall's Science Explorer textbooks.  From time to time, we use Science Explorer texts in class to supplement lessons; however, the handouts and lab investigations used in our Science classrooms contain all of the readings and notes students need to be successful on assignments. Each unit that we cover in Science, references a separate text or texts in the Science Explorer series; however, Baltimore County’s curriculum imbeds much of the appropriate reading text within the handouts so that you the parent can follow along with our daily curriculum.

Parents can also purchase the CD-ROM of each text title which is called StudentExpress with interactive Text CD-ROM for $16.97 per title per CD-ROM plus shipping and handling.
