Library Media Center
Volunteers Needed!

The Library Media Center is looking for parent volunteers for a number of activities.  Parents interested in helping at the annual Scholastic Book Fair (November 12th-16th) should contact Mrs. Mullins as soon as possible. In addition, the Library needs parents who can devote an hour a week to helping with shelving, book repair and other clerical projects.  Any time you can give will be greatly appreciated. All volunteers must complete a volunteer application, available in the main office.  Please email Mrs. Mullins for more information.

Destiny!

Destiny is our new Web-based library catalog that can be used from any Internet connected computer at home or in school.  Benefits of using Destiny include:

  • Destiny shows books available at every school in the Baltimore County school district, multiplying the collection available to our staff, students, and their parents from (on average) 10,000 books per school  to over 1,850,000 books.
  • Every search returns a link(s) that connects the searcher to pre-selected, teacher-approved, grade leveled Web pages that correspond to the search terms selected.   The ability to search for both books and Web sites correlated to the Voluntary State Curriculum will make Destiny an invaluable tool for teachers and curriculum offices.
  • Destiny is searchable not only by key word, title, author, subject and series, but also by correlation to Maryland’s Voluntary State Curriculum.
  • To provide access to our ESOL students and their parents, the catalog can be searched in Spanish or French.
  • Destiny is image-rich, thus appealing to visual learners. The book cover is pictured in the search list. Selecting the book displays valuable information, such as the copies available in all the elementary schools in BCPS, a description of the book, reading and interest level, etc. Clicking on the book cover (Title Peek) allows the reader to explore book pages and read reviews.
  • Destiny creates a bibliography from a booklist with a touch of one button.

Give Destiny a try today!

Maryland K12 Digital Library

Students can access the Maryland K12 Digital Library through the following link: http://www.bcps.org/offices/lis/feebased/index.html.

These online databases are subscriptions licensed by the Baltimore County Public Schools or the MDK-12 Digital Library for use by students, staff, and parents in school or from home. Fee-based database digital content, unlike most content found on the free Internet, represents authoritative content from reference, periodical and multimedia information resources. An investigation of a subject or research project should always include information located in these fee-based databases. The organization of these databases is exceptional and the powerful search features ensure success in locating information on almost any subject.

No password is needed when accessing these databases from the Baltimore County Public Schools.  To access these databases from home a username and login ID are required.  Please stop by the library for further information.
