G/T Art Program Nomination Process Reminders

The nomination process for the gifted and talented art program opened during the month of October. Students may approach the process themselves by asking their art teacher for the appropriate forms, or they may be nominated by their current or previous art teachers. A portfolio of student artwork and three nominations are required of all students. Art teachers are available to provide counseling to students in the preparation of work.

A review process will be conducted in April to review portfolios and make recommendations of eligibility for the G/T art program. Students whose portfolios do not meet the eligibility criteria may reapply the following year after further counseling and acting upon recommendations.

Completed nominations and portfolios are due to the art teachers at Pine Grove Middle School on or before April 11.

(We have received many questions concerning this process, so we are reprinting this information.)

Danielle H. and Monet D.’s Artwork Exhibited at MAEA Conference

A self-portrait with an expressionist theme  drawn by Danielle H. was selected to be exhibited at the Maryland Art Educators Association conference at Towson University  on October  19. Danielle was a student in Mrs. Morgan’s gifted and talented grade 8 class last year. She drew herself from a photograph that shows her face filled with expression. The drawing shows her talent in working with value and contrast using  drawing pencils.

Monet’s drawing showcases her skills  in drawing from observation and using colored pencils to accurately show color and shadow. The soda can was drawn in four stages, first as an un-crushed perfect can, and then in three more subsequent stages, with the can being crushed a bit more at each stage. The challenge for Monet, one of Mrs. Morgan’s current grade 8 students, was to show the details of the can, such as the lettering, as it was changed by  each stage of crushing .

Both students did excellent jobs on their art assignments, which is why their work was chosen for the exhibit.!

Art Magnet High School Portfolio Assistance
Save Those Sketchbooks!
Box Tops

Students planning on seeking admission to Carver Center for the Arts and/or Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts should see their Mrs. Morgan for information about portfolio requirements. Assistance with the required drawings is also available, as well as some of the materials that are needed for the portfolio. Students should notify their art teacher that they are interested in preparing a portfolio and Mrs. Morgan will get in touch with them through the art classes.

Sketchbooks are used each year in all art classes. There is no need to purchase a new sketchbook next year if there are still pages left in the old one. Keep the sketchbooks in a safe place over the summer, so they will be ready in the fall. The art team will have additional sketchbooks for sale in the fall.

Don’t forget to save your Box Tops for Education from your holiday cooking and baking items! Students can bring them in to their art teacher, and perhaps win a prize! Thanks!
