Standard Math
The
holidays are quickly approaching, and this is a great time for
you to help your child apply all the math skills they have
learned this year. When out shopping for the perfect gift, have
your child use their estimation skills to estimate the cost of
multiple products or the change that they should receive. Don’t
forget to teach them how to shop for the best deal by comparing
prices. All of these tricks are a great way to apply their math
skills to real-life scenarios.
Students
have recently completed the first benchmarks in math 6. The
upcoming unit includes percents and probability. Currently, we
are completing our number sense unit by discussing prime
factorization and how to use prime factorization to find the
Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of multiple numbers.
GT Math
GT 6 math is transitioning into some
pre-algebra concepts. All students are working hard and are
excited about this new area of learning. Students will be
learning about adding positives, negatives, fractions,
probabilities, and lengths. They will be solving one and
two-step equations that have negative numbers.
Please ensure that your child is doing
his/her homework each and every evening as it is an important
part of the learning process. There is also a reading involved
with almost every homework assignment. As the holiday season
approaches, we realize that there are many more activities for
the students, however, homework is just as important now as any
other time of the year. Please encourage your child to continue
to keep up the great work that he/she has done so far this
year. This way, your child can continue to have success in GT 6
math.
Algebraic Foundations
Hello and happy holidays. Can you believe
it is December? We are now well into the second quarter and
deep into our Operations of Fractions unit. This time of year
can be very stressful. Please help your child continue to do
his/her best by monitoring their homework completion and by
having their supplies for school. |

sacrifice. The three controlling questions are (1) How does
an individual’s choices affect the development of his
identity and his perception by his society?, (2) How does
the use/abuse of power affect the

of his identity and his perception by his society?, and (3)
How does the individual balance his responsibility to
society with his personal
desires? The novel for this unit is
THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING

various poems and myths which correlate with the overarching
concepts, as well as focusing on dramatic elements.
Written assignments will include original lyric poetry,
original narrative poetry (ballads), a descriptive
paragraph, dialogue, a comparison essay, unit BCRs, and a
debate by proposition (written and oral).
Grammatical skills this quarter focus on complex and
compound sentences, dependent and independent clauses,

and prepositional phrases, sentence combining, varying
sentence structure and style, appositive phrases, sentence
patters (S-LV-PN/S-LV-PA), and diction (oral).
Language Arts benchmarks and short cycles will be
administered in January and February.
Ms. Colbert, Mr. Leibee, and Ms. Zimmerman would like to
thank all of the parents and guardians for all of their
support and guidance at home.
Have a wonderful and safe holiday season! |

Standard & GT
World Cultures ends the ’07 year by beginning an
exploration of South Asia which will continue into ‘08.
We will look at physical characteristics and human
characteristics with a focus on the country of India.
The topics include: standard of living, monsoons, and
the caste system. During this time period, students
will be working on a service learning project. As many
parents are already aware, students are creating posters
to increase awareness regarding the destruction of
rainforests. Students are asked to research information
about the value of rainforests, as well as details
concerning the deforestation. In addition, students are
asked to locate organizations who offer assistance with
this environmental concern. Students will take the
second benchmark test during the end of quarter 2.
The Social Studies department thanks all parents
for their involvement and assistance in the project and
the continued development of strong World Cultures
students.

Standard Science Classes
In
Science, all
sixth grade standard classes are currently working
within the second unit, “Energy, Electricity, and
Magnetism.” So far, students have learned about
concepts relating to the structure of the atom and
nature of its subatomic particles, energy types, forms,
and transformations, and the Law of Electrostatics. In
addition, some classes are learning about magnetism and
electricity.

Unit Project
Students analyzed the creative cartoons of Rube
Goldberg so that they would be able to model their
culminating unit project, a “Room Protector,” in the
spirit and nature of his work. The “Room Protector,” a
design on paper, will include ideas relating to our unit
topics: energy, electricity, and magnetism. The
projects will be very elaborate, creative and a little
zany.
Assessment Preparation
Assessment dates are published several days in
advance to the students. To further assist students in
their mastery of unit concepts, study guides are
distributed approximately three to four days ahead of
assessments. Concepts are reviewed during class and
should likewise be reviewed at home several nights prior
to a quiz or test. Assessment dates should be written
in your child’s agenda book. Please continue to monitor
homework by reviewing the agenda daily.

Language Arts
The
6th
grade Language Arts students are continuing their year
with the unit,
Shaping My Heritage.
The overarching concept being explored for this unit
is: By exploring my heritage, I will gain a better
understanding of how values and traditions shape my self
and others. The two controlling questions are (1) As a
reader, what can I learn about the values, cultures, and
traditions of heritages? and (2) How do values,
cultures, and traditions shape a heritage? The novels
for this unit are
SADAKO AND THE THOUSAND PAPER CRANES
and
ESPERANZA RISING.
The students will also be reading various poems and
myths which correlate with the overarching concepts, as
well as focusing on dramatic elements.
READING
Language!
Students in the Language! program will be
completing their current level /book around the end of
the second quarter. Students will take Summative
Assessments and Progress Indicators that will provide
information about their current level of performance.
This information will be sent home to parents. Please
continue to promote reading outside of school by having
your child complete their monthly reading calendars.
Scott Foresman
Students in the Scott Foresman reading program are
working on the following skills this term: drawing
conclusions, paraphrasing, visualizing, use of
persuasive language, and determining and evaluating
author’s purpose. Sixth Grade BCPS students will be
taking short-cycle assessments starting in January. The
first one is scheduled for January 7th.
These assessments will allow us to monitor the students’
progress between the Benchmarks. The next Benchmark
Assessment will be February 4, 2008. Please continue to
promote reading outside of school by having your child
complete their monthly
reading calendars

Recently,
I went to classrooms to discuss bully prevention with students.
Students watched a video clip of 6th
graders and the effects of bullying on their lives. Students,
then, brainstormed ways to handle a bullying situation. Here are
some of the strategies with which the 6th
graders identified:
· Walk
away. Do not stay and take it.
· Don’t
respond with anger, but tell the bully to stop.
· Find
a friend to support you.
· Don’t
be a passive supporter by joining in on the laughter and teasing
or gossip.
· Write
it down. Keep track of dates, times, and what happened, so
you’ll have documented proof.
· Tell
a trusted adult at school if a bully threatens you or someone
else.
Students
were also given the option to earn student service learning
hours by creating an Anti-Bullying poster for one hour or
writing a bullying prevention poem/song/rap for five hours.
Below are examples of two poems that were written by students.
Bully Poem
By: Ziying Q.
I believe that the
victim will be bully free,
But only if the
victim tells.
Even though the
gender is a he or she,
You have to tell
even if you feel pounding bells.
You have to believe
that a victim or bystander can work together,
To make sure the
bully won’t cause any more pain.
All of us must
believe that a bully he or she,
In the future start
losing gain.
So don’t stop
believing and mope,
Keep believing and
give the victim hope.
SAY NO TO
BULLYING
By: Julianna W.
As
I walk down the hall I hear a bully say, “Give me your money!”
This situation is serious- it’s not funny.
“NO!” is what the child is going to say,
He
made the right decision today.
You need to stay strong, and tell an adult,
Bullying is never the victim’s fault.
Tell everybody the dangers of bullying that lay away,
Everyone should be happy, smart, and full of knowledge today.
